San Clemente beaches closing early amid increasing public safety concerns

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 11:52:56 GMT

San Clemente beaches will now close two hours early at 10 p.m. amid growing public safety concerns. The change was approved Tuesday and went into effect Wednesday night. However, it won’t be enforced until signs are officially posted at the beach. A unanimous city council vote approved the rule following a May 26 assault involving three Marines being beaten by a crowd of teenagers at the San Clemente Pier. The move addresses ongoing concerns over increasing public safety issues at the beach and nearby downtown areas. Officials also approved the hiring of more private security to patrol the beaches. The early closure would fall in line with most Orange County beaches which generally close at 10 p.m. as well.“I don’t think anything good happens on those beaches after 10 p.m.," said Councilmember Victor Cabral. "I think it’s an appropriate time to close them."“It’s long overdue,” said Councilmember Mark Enmeier.Cell phone video recorded the beaten of two off-duty Marines on the San Cleme...

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — The brother of a gay American who was attacked and fell from a Sydney cliff top in 1988 said elements within local police had demonized their family over their pursuit of justice. An Australian man was sentenced to nine years in prison Thursday for killing Scott Johnson at the known gay haunt. His older brother Steve Johnson led the family’s efforts to overturn a coroner’s finding in 1989 that the openly gay mathematician had taken his own life.Steve Johnson told Australian Broadcasting Corp. on Friday that evidence in a New South Wales state government inquiry into gay hate crimes had confirmed “our worst fears that the police were really not only opposed to the investigation but demonizing our family.”“It’s still a question mark why? Maybe they thought of Scott’s case as a tinderbox that would force them to work on the other 100 cases of gay men who died during the same period,” Steve Johnson said.“There are still some in the police force that are opposed...

WASHINGTON — Rishi Sunak, not a tall man, looked tiny against the backdrop of the vast Washington Nationals stadium, largely empty Wednesday night beneath blankets of heavy smog. The British prime minister’s enthusiasm was undimmed as he smiled and waved at fans in his shiny baseball jacket, determined to make the most of a brief moment in the American spotlight. In truth, Sunak is more cricket fan than baseball guy — unlike his U.S. counterpart, Joe Biden, a regular at Philadelphia Phillies matches back when he was vice president. When they met this week in the U.S. capital, the British prime minister and the American president tried to make the most of their mutual interests, despite the glaringly obvious differences. It’s not just cricket vs. baseball; nor even just Conservative vs. Democrat. Sunak is 43 years old; Biden over 80. Sunak attended one of England’s most expensive public schools and is married to a billionaire heiress; Biden plays up his blue collar cre...
