Editorial: Was taking McClain’s killers to trial the right thing to do?

Coloradans have known one heartbreaking truth for four long years: Without the aggressive and callous actions of three Aurora police officers and two paramedics, Elijah McClain would be alive today. And now, after the first prosecutor on the case refused to take the homicide to trial, Coloradans know another truth: There was not enough evidence to convince a jury that two of those officers’ actions were criminal. Only Aurora police officer Randy Roedema was convicted, and even then, jurors found him guilty of the lesser charges he faced — criminally negligent homicide and third-degree assault. As we await the trial of the two paramedics who injected McClain as he lay restrained and unconscious on the ground with an overdose of ketamine, Coloradans may begin to wonder if the initial prosecutor, District Attorney Dave Young, was correct in his decision not to press charges. Was this outcome really worth the time, effort, and expense put forth by Colorado’s Attorney General Phil We...Finally, a make-ahead turkey that’s ready to travel

By Melissa Clark, The New York TimesIn a perfect world, you’d always be able to serve your Thanksgiving turkey directly after its sojourn in the oven. It’s the best way to take advantage of the bird’s crisp juiciness and meaty aroma — not to mention a chance to hide in the kitchen from football games. But what if you have to drive your cooked turkey an hour away to a Friendsgiving? Or you need room in your oven for pie? Or you’d simply prefer to wake up on Thursday morning secure in the knowledge that the trickiest part of your feast is already waiting for you in the fridge?Whatever the reason, there are times when you need a killer make-ahead turkey recipe, and I’ve found the way.It took several weeks of testing and a dozen birds to get the result I wanted: a reheated turkey that tastes very nearly as good as it did right after roasting, with a juicy breast, tender dark meat and glistening, crispy skin.It also had to be food safe — because Thanksgiving is stressful enoug...10 Freeway closed: L.A. mayor says 'damage will not be fixed in an instant'

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and other local officials held a news conference Monday morning to update Angelenos on the closure of the 10 Freeway through downtown Los Angeles.“To the 300,000 people who would normally drive on this stretch of the 10 and to those who live, work or have appointments or schools in the area, as we made clear yesterday, this was a huge fire and the damage will not be fixed in an instant,” Bass said during her 6 a.m. address."Engineers have worked all night and are working right now to determine our path forward," Bass continued. "I have made it clear with our local, state and federal partners that any unnecessary bureaucracy or delays are not happening here."The scene of the fire that seriously damaged the 10 Freeway through Los Angeles. DEAR TRAVEL TROUBLESHOOTER: British Airways canceled my flight from Baltimore to London in 2020. The airline sent me an email that said I could either get a refund or a flight credit and that I had until the end of this year to decide.Christopher Elliott, the Travel Troubleshooter However, after calling British Airways numerous times, they claim they don’t have any record of the flight.I paid for this flight with a combination of miles and cash. I’d like a refund of my 150,000 points as well as the $770 in taxes. Can you help me?— Louis Hyman, BaltimoreANSWER: It’s highly unusual for an airline to lose a reservation like this. But a look at your correspondence suggests that’s exactly what happened. You had a ticket, and then British Airways somehow lost it. Now the airline wants to keep your points and the cash you paid for other taxes and fees.Normally, you would be able to send British Airways proof of your reservation, and it would then fix the ...Downtown San Jose housing project may sprout near Google village site

(NEXSTAR) – Thanksgiving 2023 is already shaping up to be an especially frustrating one for lots of Americans, and that’s before they find out the stuffing has raisins in it.This year, AAA predicts that approximately 55.4 million Americans will be traveling at least 50 miles to get to Thanksgiving dinner, the vast majority of whom — 49.13 million — will be taking the journey by car, according to the organization's latest projections. That would make it the busiest Thanksgiving travel season since 2019, and the third-busiest (after 2005 and 2019) since AAA started posting its forecasts in 2000. Pedestrian deaths are spiking across the country: Why? With millions of motorists sharing the country’s busiest travel corridors in the days around Thanksgiving, it’s inevitable that many will get stuck in traffic for at least a portion of the trip. But drivers can reduce their chances of frustrating delays with a bit of forethought and flexibility, according to AAA.AAA used data from INRIX,...Latest news
